Friends of Guemes Island is open to all persons for the purpose of supporting the preservation of the rural character of the island, its sense of community, a sustainable lifestyle, and the planning for change in open and approved processes.

Appealing the Fare Increase

A grassroots effort, unaffiliated with any island organization (including this one), has appealed the fare increase to state agencies, our representatives and the Commissioners. They are asking for a review to determine if the fares are justifiable. They have also asked the Commissioners to increase fares incrementally and grant a greater discount to the disabled who must drive across and to those on fixed incomes. They have requested a response within two weeks.

Appeal organizers have gathered over 425 signatures and 30 testimonials. Copies of the letters, comments and signatures have been sent to:

Sam Reed, Attorney General • Rob McKenna, Secretary of State • Mary Margaret Haugen, State Senator 10th district, Transportation Chair • Harriet Spanel, State Senator 40th District • Rick Larsen, Congressman 2nd District • Patty Murray, US Senator • Skagit County Commissioners Don Munks, Ken Dahlstead, Ted Anderson • Joan Neff, WSDOT • WUTC • Seattle PI • Seattle Times • Skagit Valley Herald • Anacortes American • Glen Veal, Guemes Island Ferry Committee Chair.
